The Rella Report

Dear OMOS families,

I hope you enjoy your Easter break with the students at home.

It was a short week!  As the school year wraps up, please take a moment to check your Renweb account for any missing or incomplete work that needs to be submitted.  Progress reports went home yesterday – please verify that work is turned in and reflected in the grades.

Although the unit 15 flashcards are due the Tuesday we return from Easter break, there is no vocabulary test when we return – the remaining vocabulary tests are as follows:

  • April 30 – unit 15
  • May 7 – units 13 – 15
  • May 14 – units 1 – 15 (this is a final and the grade cannot be dropped).  Students who earn an A on this final may drop two prior vocabulary test grades.  Please start studying now.  Ten minutes a day is MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE than the whole night before.

We have been writing a poem every Wednesday.  A cumulative poetry test with open notes will be given on May 16th.  Please ensure that your notes are up to date.  Notebooks with notes are due the Friday before that test on May 10th.

Book talks were due on May 13th – but will be moved to May 6th due to the literature test on poetry and the vocabulary final.  Please make sure you read a NONFICTION book if you just completed a FICTION book talk and vice versa.  You can check on Renweb if you are unsure of which one you still need to do this trimester.

8th-grade grads – purchase your ticket for the graduation celebration today!

Celebration Tickets are available for purchase in the OMOS school office.  Your child’s ticket(s) must be purchased before Friday, May 3rd.  You have the option to apply your ticket purchase to FACTS or pay cash for the ticket(s).  Ticket price is $30.

BIG SHOUT OUT to the 8th-grade parents who chaperoned the Phoenix field trip: Mr. Jentoft, Mrs. Teich, Mrs. Coonan, Mr. Apodaca, Mrs. Dickherber and of course, the staff, Mrs. Lanik, Mr. Lenox, Mr. Alvidrez, and Mr. Krautscheid.

Important Dates:

April 17: Mid-Trimester progress reports sent home
April 18-22: No School, Easter Break
April 23: Family Night at Chipotle from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
May 1 and 2: Junior High School Play
May 13: Confirmation

May 22: 8th Grade Graduation and Celebration
May 24: Last Day of School, dismissal at 1:10 p.m., no childcare available

For additional details please visit:
http://www.omosschool.com/school-calendar.html

Random fact of the day:

I before e, except after c
Or when sounded as ‘a’ as in ‘neighbor’ and ‘weigh’
Unless the ‘c’ is part of a ‘sh’ sound as in ‘glacier’
Or it appears in comparatives and superlatives like ‘fancier’
And also except when the vowels are sounded as ‘e’ as in ‘seize’
Or ‘i’ as in ‘height’
Or also in ‘-ing’ inflections ending in ‘-e’ as in ‘cueing’
Or in compound words as in ‘albeit’
Or occasionally in technical words with strong etymological links to their parent languages as in ‘cuneiform’
Or in other numerous and random exceptions such as ‘science’, ‘forfeit’, and ‘weird’.

The Rella Report

Good morning, OMOS families,

It has been a productive week with oratory writing, quotation and capitalization review, poetry, and MAP testing.

I have updated all grades for IXLs, poetry, and flashcards.  If students are missing any of these, please complete them and turn them in on Monday or Tuesday.

Coming up this week are 2 field trips – Monday for 7th grade and Thursday for 8th grade.  If you have not turned in permission slips or paid for the trip, please do so as soon as possible.

This upcoming week, we will be working on more oratory writing for 8th grade.  7th grade will start a writing project as well – we will enter those final papers into a Scholastic contest for which the winner can get $2500!

All junior high students were entered into a poetry contest this past week – winners will be announced in May and those students who were selected will be published into an anthology.  More to come on this as we hear back…

Wednesday, students will write another poem and will have a vocabulary test on unit 13 on Tuesday.

There is no tutoring this Thursday due to the field trip.

Interested in being in the yearbook?  All 8th-grade parents, please read this message from our yearbook coordinator, Mrs. Baker: Hello eighth grade parents-1xg6plg

Enjoy your weekend!

Dear OMOS family,

It was a great week of book talks!!  This was by far the best presentation yet… most students nailed it!  There is only one more book talk for this school year:  May 13th.  All of 7th grade will need to present on a NONFICTION book.  8th grade will need to do the OPPOSITE of whichever they did for the March book talk.  (So if you did a fiction, then you must present on a nonfiction book.)  Rubrics were returned in the drawers today and can be picked up and brought home on Monday.

The vocabulary test on Tuesday is for units 7-12.   Here is the schedule for the remaining vocabulary tests:

Here is the schedule of the remaining vocabulary tests:

  • April 9, 2019
    • Unit 13
    • 10 questions
  • April 16, 2019
    • Unit 14

    • Unit 1-15
    • 25 questions – 4 points each

Next week, 8th grade will work on oratory and writing more poetry.  7th grade will work on writing as well as poetry.

7th-grade students who are retaking the text features test will do so on Thursday, during tutoring.  Please make a point to attend if you have turned in your booklets for the redo.

I am very excited to announce that we will have an Oratory Contest with local Toastmaster judges in May who will listen to the 8th-grade speeches and award monetary prizes.  Date to be determined, but likely in mid-May.

April 23rd is Chipotle night… look for flyers on Monday.  Please support our school.
